Cibo Matto at PS1-Volume: Bed of Sound
At PS1, there was a sound art project called "Volume:Bed of Sound" and a lot of artists and musicians participated in the project such as Vito Acconci, Sonic Youth, Loudon Wainwright and of course, Cibo Matto. There were two types of the installation; one was "outter-ear" which is letting the audience on the bed listen to the music through big speakers in the room, and the other was "inner-ear" and it provided headphones for the audience, so that they could choose and listen to whichever music they wanted to listen to. Each artist had several songs in the CD player which was put in the bed( for the "inner-ear" ) and Cibo Matto had three instrumental songs(Jungle, Country, and Beauty) and one song features Miho Hatori on vocal(Swords & Paintbrush). The first song, Jungle was a rhythmic instrumental song which had kind of dancing beat. Country was a very short song which consisted of somewhat crude noise and impressive instrumental sound. I thought Beauty was the most experimental one of them and it was very short as well. Swords & Paintbrush had catchy drum beat and Miho was signing it with her charming voice ever! I loved the four songs very much so I coudln't help but listen to the songs over and over again.
I hope I can hear CD-unreleased songs in their future CD sometime, especially, Swords & Paintbrush (Countryis in their Stereotype A, japanese copy) I applaude Cibo Matto's endless and innovative experiments. I was so glad to meet theirs songs at PS1 and it was like meeting a different side of Cibo Matto, but they were still full of creative energy.
